Westbourne Celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Westbourne School proudly celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with an inspiring and hands-on workshop delivered by visitors from the University of Sheffield.

The session explored a fascinating theme: how medicines deliver messages to the cells in our bodies to help us feel better. Pupils were captivated as they learned how cells communicate with one another and how medicines are carefully designed to target the correct cells — known as receptors — to avoid causing unwanted side effects.
Through engaging activities and practical demonstrations, pupils discovered how scientists test medicines to ensure they reach the right destination in the body. To bring the science to life, pupils took part in a lively three-team relay race, carrying out “fair tests” to identify different medicines. The competitive element added energy and excitement to the learning experience.
Some pupils even stepped into the role of scientists, analysing results and helping to identify a range of medicines, gaining valuable insight into scientific research and experimentation.
Importantly, the workshop also gave our girls the opportunity to see local women working in scientific roles, providing powerful role models and demonstrating that careers in STEM are both accessible and achievable. Seeing women from our own community leading scientific research was an inspiring and empowering experience for all.
It was a memorable celebration of science, curiosity and possibility — and a fitting way to mark a day dedicated to encouraging the next generation of women in STEM. A big thank you to Helen Wright, Senior Scientist II and Asha Khunti, Laboratory Technician I who led the day's activities.
Mrs Brocklebyrne, Head of Junior School, said:
“Experiences like this are invaluable in sparking curiosity and ambition in our pupils. To see our girls engaging so confidently with complex scientific ideas — and meeting women who are actively shaping the world of science — was truly inspiring. We are committed to ensuring every child knows that their potential is limitless.”
