Creativity

Creativity at Westbourne

At Westbourne School, creativity is woven into the fabric of our community.

Our rich and creative timetable offers pupils countless opportunities to express themselves, think independently, and push the boundaries of their imagination. From art and music to drama and innovation, we nurture self-expression, empowering pupils to become confident, resilient individuals with a lifelong passion for learning. Our dynamic curriculum ensures that every child has the freedom to explore, experiment, and innovate both in and beyond the classroom.

Art & Design

At Westbourne, artwork isn’t confined to the classroom - it transforms our school corridors into galleries and makes an impact across the city. Our pupils regularly earn accolades in the Sheffield Young Artist competition and exhibit their sculptures in the Botanical Gardens, showcasing their talents to a wider audience.

“The children get a huge amount of satisfaction seeing their work exhibited in a non school environment. They enjoy working as a group and love the challenge of problem solving to create, for example,  a sculpture which will fit into a site specific environment, like the glass house at the Botanical Gardens.”

Mrs Hawdon, Art & Design Teacher

Our specialist art facilities provide the perfect environment for creative exploration. Pupils experiment with a variety of media, from traditional drawing and painting to sculpture, digital art, mixed-media projects, and photography. Inspired by renowned artists and techniques, they develop their own distinctive styles while refining technical skills. Regular exhibitions celebrate their achievements and inspire the wider school community.

Music

Music is the heartbeat of Westbourne. Just walk through our corridors, and you’ll hear the melodies of instruments and voices filling the air. With a dedicated music department, pupils have access to an extensive range of instruments, vocal coaching, and composition opportunities.

Our choirs, ensembles, and orchestras perform at school and external events, fostering teamwork, discipline, and a deep appreciation for music. A highlight of the year is our annual summer festival, Westfest, where every pupil from Year 5 upwards has the opportunity to take to the stage. The summer recital for our exceptional musicians takes place at the historic Upper Chapel in Sheffield city centre, and showcases the breadth of talent within our school.

“Through our music curriculum lessons, enrichment opportunities and extra-curricular activities, we strive to develop well-rounded musicians with a deep love for creating, listening and appreciating all forms of music making.”

Mrs Stroud, Head of Music at Westbourne School.

Drama & Performance

Drama at Westbourne is more than just performance; it cultivates confidence, communication skills, and creativity. From an early age, pupils immerse themselves in storytelling, role-play, and theatre, growing into accomplished young performers through workshops and productions.

A pinnacle of the school calendar is our annual production, a ticketed event running over three nights. This year’s much-anticipated performance of Disney’s High School Musical has already generated a buzz of excitement. Our drama programme also includes regular theatre trips to the Lyceum and Crucible, as well as a thriving LAMDA programme, where pupils consistently achieve outstanding results in speech and drama exams. Last year, every group earned individual distinctions, with 101 pupils participating across the school an exceptional accomplishment.

“All our children and young people continue to amaze me with their commitment, enthusiasm and loyalty to our performing arts department; always dazzling us with their brilliance and talent”

STEAM & Innovation

Creativity at Westbourne extends far beyond the arts. Our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives encourage pupils to think critically and solve problems in innovative ways. Coding challenges, robotics clubs, and hands-on design projects provide real-world applications for creative thinking. Our engineering pupils have designed and tested model rockets for the UKROC national youth rocket competition.

"Seeing our pupils engage with real-world engineering applications is inspiring. Our visit to Drax Power Station brought classroom learning to life, allowing pupils to see sustainable energy and large-scale engineering in action. These experiences spark curiosity, develop problem-solving skills, and ignite a real passion for engineering."

Mr Binns, Head of Engineering at Westbourne

An Inspiring Environment

Creativity flourishes in a stimulating and supportive setting. Our school is equipped with practice rooms, performance spaces, and digital resources that encourage pupils to push boundaries and think beyond conventions. Enriching trips to galleries, theatres, and creative workshops further broaden their artistic and cultural horizons.

At Westbourne, creativity is not just encouraged, it is celebrated. We provide every child with the opportunity to explore their talents, develop new skills, and embrace their creative potential.
