Working with us/CPD

Westbourne has a rich CPD offer for colleagues, recognising that all staff are lifelong learners. The example this sets for the pupils, that learning will always be important, is a strong and positive message.

Outside of the ongoing support and development offered by curriculum and team leaders to their colleagues, our Senior Leadership Team also offer a range of other CPD opportunities, including:

Primarily led by our Headteacher, this is open to any and all colleagues with an interest in being a future leader. The programme is also open to existing leaders who want to broaden their leadership knowledge and experience. Some activities include:

  • Pedagogical reading;
  • Research and discussion of various leadership styles and approaches;
  • Scenario-based activities and workshops where colleagues are encouraged to put into practice their learning

All staff attend the Development Workshops, opting into various activities from a carousel of options, which regularly change. As well as being given the option to choose an area of interest to delve deeper into, staff are encouraged to lead development workshops in their own areas of interest and expertise. This is particularly supportive for colleagues who are already in or considering being part of our Leadership Programme. Workshops explore a wide range of different topics such as:

  • The use of AI in the classroom and beyond;
  • Managing difficult conversations/situations;
  • Differentiation;
  • Enhancing equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging in the classroom.

All staff are encouraged and supported to volunteer to lead a change project at any point in their career at Westbourne School.  These would take place over two to three terms, and would see a colleague implementing a project linked to our Whole School Development Plan.  Through their project they would receive support from our Senior Leaders, learning how to drive change, galvanise teams and show impact.  Colleagues gain a wealth of valuable experience running change projects, often getting to experience numerous things for the first time, from leading staff meetings or working groups to presenting plans to parents/carers and delivering findings and outcomes to governors and  our SLT.

Staff are encouraged and supported by the school to undertake relevant, appropriate additional qualifications which will both add value to the work they undertake at school and will support their own professional development.  We are committed to lifelong learning, and are conscious of the positive example set to the pupils when they see that adults are just as passionate about learning as we expect our pupils to be!

 "It's such a friendly place - the staff are friendly and the pupils are friendly.  It's so nice to hear ‘Hi, Miss!" called across the playground or just when passing a pupil."

Fiona Walker, PA to the Headteacher and Senior School Secretary
