Houses/Charities

At Westbourne, our House system is a vibrant and integral part of school life, designed to foster community, teamwork, and a spirit of friendly competition. Every pupil from Reception to Year 11 is assigned to one of our four Houses, creating opportunities for friendships and collaboration across year groups.

Our Houses are:

  • Holmes – Embodying courage, leadership, and pride
  • Johnson – Representing wisdom, loyalty, and perseverance

  • 1885–1887 Miss Julia Holmes
  • 1885–1887 Miss Sarah Whitfield
  • 1919–1933 Mr C Mercer
  • 1933–1944 Mr GBB Johnson

Pupils can earn House Points every day through their academic work, effort, and contributions to school life. Exceptional achievements are further recognised through commendations (worth 5 House Points) and excellents (worth 10 House Points), encouraging students to strive for their best in all areas of learning.

Beyond academics, the House system promotes participation in a wide range of activities, including House Days, sports competitions, academic challenges, performing arts, and fundraising events. These experiences help students develop leadership skills, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.

Each year, pupils have the exciting opportunity to campaign to become a House Captain. They present their ideas and leadership vision to their peers, and House members vote to elect their representatives. House Captains play a crucial role in motivating their team, organising events, and embodying the values of their House.

Through House events and daily contributions, pupils accumulate points for their House, with the prestigious House Cup awarded at the end of the academic year. The House system not only enhances school spirit but also provides valuable opportunities for personal growth, responsibility, and celebrating achievements together.

At Westbourne, our House system is more than just a competition, it’s about supporting one another, making lasting memories, and shaping well-rounded individuals ready for the future.

The house system at Westbourne provides a wonderful opportunity to further instil and embrace the values that lie at the core of a Westbourne education. The four houses serve as a bridge between Junior School and Senior School, giving rise to the most poignant moments in the school year. We see our youngest pupils looking up to their older role models, and it gives our older Westbournians the opportunity to take responsibility for others, to learn about being aspirational figures, and to understand the expectations that accompany that role.

Although Westbourne School isn’t a boarding school, their house system showcases the enduring value of fostering camaraderie and character. It’s about unity, leadership and responsibility, transcending the school’s structure. This tradition enriches their school community, emphasising the importance of values and community in education.
