Learning Support - “Where You Belong”

Accessibility of learning and social opportunities is a key mission at Westbourne School.

Westbourne is a non-selective school, which recognises and values pupils’ unique talents and strengths. Within our SEND provision we recognise that some pupils need a little extra help to reduce ‘barriers’ they may be facing and enable them to reach their personal potential and desired outcomes.

Because Westbourne is such a small and inclusive school, we are in the privileged position of being able to notice whenever pupils are struggling, whether that be academically or pastorally. We have a strong Wellbeing Team in the school, who work closely with all staff to ensure that any pupil can access learning support if required, regardless of whether or not they have a recognised SEND profile.  This fluid and flexible approach fosters a truly inclusive and destigmatised environment, where pupils are encouraged to see the value of seeking timely support where it is needed.

Our approach is a whole school one, with our SENDCo working closely with other key members of the Wellbeing Team (such as our Assistant Heads in the Junior and Senior School).  Our SENDCo liaise with pupils, parents/carers, the wider staff team and outside agencies to ensure the effective sharing of information in order to ensure the best outcomes for our pupils.

As line manager of our SEND department and Wellbeing Team, our Deputy Head ensures the voices of all our SEND pupils are heard at a Senior Leadership Team level.

To augment positive provision for pupils, the Learning Support Room in the Senior School, is  a welcoming environment where pupils can:

  • Relax and unwind
  • Socialise and build relationships - before school and at any break time
  • Work with staff to develop key learning, personal, social  and emotional skills, through individual or small group interventions
  • Engage in personal study
  • Take ‘time out’ or sensory breaks when needed
  • Seek advice and support from trusted adults

Learning Support provision in the wider school community encompasses SEND support for pupils placed on the SEND Register of Need. This may include in-class support, additional 1:1 tuition from a Specialist Teacher (Junior School only and at an additional cost), use of assistive technology and access to intervention groups/programmes.
