Westby Represents the UK at International Robotics Competition in China
At Westbourne School, we love celebrating the achievements of our pupils, and Westby’s story is truly inspiring. From a young age, Westby had a passion for coding and robots, which led him to join Discovery STEM Education in Year 4. Over the past couple of years, he has been taking part in the Discovery STEM World Educational Robotics Programme, developing and coding self-driving cars.
In July, Westby competed in the national qualifier and secured a place to represent the UK at the international robotics competition in China. Around 30 countries took part, and Westby finished 22nd out of 40 in his age category. While his robot – which had been performing perfectly – didn’t behave as expected during judging, he gained invaluable experience and insights from the week-long trip.
During his time in China, Westby visited a variety of commercial and research organisations to see robotics in practice, and even stayed in a robot hotel, complete with robot-delivered room service! The UK team also won the ‘Most Popular Team Award’, highlighting their collaborative spirit and innovation.
Reflecting on Westby’s achievement, Headteacher Mr Edmanson said:
"Westby’s dedication, curiosity, and passion for robotics are a true inspiration. His commitment to Excellence – one of our core school values – has driven him to represent the UK on an international stage at such a young age. We are extremely proud of him and can’t wait to see where his talents will take him next."
Westby is now looking ahead, working hard as he hopes to qualify for the international competition again next year. His journey is a testament to what dedication, passion, and the pursuit of Excellence can achieve.
