Westbourne School is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Senior School pupil Joey, who has been selected for the England Climbing Team Foundation Programme for climbers under the age of 15.

Joey’s selection comes at the end of a remarkable year in competitive climbing. Although he was unable to attend the official selection event due to a concussion, his place on the programme was awarded based on his impressive performances in national competitions throughout 2025. Competing against older athletes, Joey reached the finals in several events, demonstrating exceptional talent, resilience and consistency despite being one of the youngest in his category.

The England Climbing Team Foundation Programme, run by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), is designed to identify and nurture young climbers with high potential, supporting them as they progress along the national performance pathway. More information about this pathway can be found on the BMC website.

Looking ahead, Joey will be competing in further national competitions this year, alongside a couple of international events.

Joey’s family has expressed their sincere gratitude for the Westbourne's ongoing support and encouragement, which has played an important role in enabling him to balance his academic commitments alongside his sporting ambitions. Ruth, Joey's mum said:

"We remain very grateful for the school’s ongoing support and encouragement - and of course very proud of Joey for showing such consistent dedication to his favourite sport."

Westbourne School is extremely proud of Joey’s dedication to his sport and looks forward to following his continued success on the climbing wall and beyond.

Mrs Laura Mirfin, Senior School Pastoral Lead and Head of Physical Education, said:

“Joey’s selection is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to his perseverance and quiet determination. He has shown great maturity in balancing his love of climbing with his school life, and it has been lovely to see his confidence grow through his dedication to the sport. We are extremely proud of Joey and look forward to supporting him as he continues on this exciting journey.”
