Medical Information
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that the school is kept up-to-date with their child’s medical conditions, for example diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and food allergies. The school requires that any medicines held in school for such conditions are up to date and replaced as necessary. This is the responsibility of parents.
Medicine will not be given to children unless the appropriate form has been completed. These are available from the school office at the beginning of each school day.
The Whole School Office will administer medication which is required during the school day, such as antibiotics or painkillers. Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration. A parent/guardian must also complete a medical form, available from the school office.
Medicines will be stored in a secure cabinet during the day or a secure fridge where necessary.
It is the responsibility of the child to request the medication at the appropriate time.
A record will be made of when the medicine was dispensed and parents will be automatically alerted at the end of the day.
Non Prescribed Medication
The school keeps a supply of paracetamol which can be given to pupils with parental consent.
Pupils with long-term medical needs can attend school regularly by providing clear guidelines of support, which are understood and accepted by both parents and the school.
In the interest of safety for all pupils in school, all medication, with the exception of epipens and inhalers for asthma sufferers, must be kept in the designated easily accessible cupboard in the school office.
Most pupils who require these carry their own. The School Office has an epipen and inhaler for emergencies only.
Parents are asked to notify the main office in advance of any planned medical appointments to be taken during the school day. This can be done via the “leave request form” on the parent portal, or by contacting Mrs Walker in the main office by telephone or email.
Pupils who need to attend appointments during the school day must sign out in the school office and sign back in again when they return. The same applies if they arrive midway through the day - they must sign in at the school office.
If contact cannot be made with parents or carers through contact numbers left with the school, then staff will use their own judgement in line with first aid training and may contact emergency services.
