Welcome to Reception

A nurturing start to your child’s learning journey, following their curiosity, with a passion for play that ignites their imagination!

Our Reception Lead, Mrs Laura Beaumont, extends a warm welcome to the start of your child’s school learning journey. Starting school is a hugely significant milestone and we are committed to providing a foundation for a lifelong love of learning that is built around a passion for play and dedication to high quality early experiences at a crucial time in your child’s development.

At Westbourne we provide an engaging, varied and balanced early years curriculum. We are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage framework which is designed to support your child’s learning and development across seven key areas. These areas are divided into three prime areas; Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development and four specific areas; Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. At Westbourne, we embrace the three core characteristics of effective learning. These characteristics help shape how children learn and develop through their early years, fostering a positive and proactive approach to education. These are Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically.

This is all implemented through adult led teaching activities and purposeful play opportunities in provision that challenge and extend prior learning. Our learning environment is warm and inviting to explore, filled with WOW moments in our classroom and outdoor provision with the support of Mr Watson, our Reception Teaching Assistant. We ensure all children are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed through high quality interactions with adults and their peers, carefully planned topics with pupil voice at the heart and a deep understanding of each child to foster their emotional development and wellbeing.

Pupil’s learning goes beyond the core subjects with specialist teachers providing exciting and inspiring lessons in Music, Drama, French, Spanish, P.E. and Forest School. We also take part in Whole School curriculum days, trips out and visitors to bring learning to life!

By building strong relationships with our children and families from day one, we unlock your child’s potential and guide them through their learning and development within the Early Years and transition into Key Stage 1.

"My son is happy and relaxed at Westbourne. The care and support his teachers provide is very nurturing and the teaching is of high quality. When we arrive at Westbourne at the start of the day, we always receive a warm and friendly welcome - the staff are outside at the entrance to greet us all come rain or shine and are available if we need to have a chat with them. When he wakes up in the morning, my son is excited to go to Westbourne - that, in my opinion, is the holy grail of parenting!"

"We are writing to express our deepest gratitude for the exceptional care and dedication you have shown to our daughter over the past two years. Your commitment to her education and personal growth has made a significant impact on her development, and I am truly thankful for your efforts. These two years have been particularly critical for her, and under your guidance, she has developed her confidence significantly. The patience and encouragement you have provided have been instrumental in her progress, and it has been a joy to see her thrive under your guidance. Additionally, we are especially grateful for your help with her English, which can be challenging for a family that does not originally speak the language. Thank you for your unwavering support, understanding, and the countless ways you have gone above and beyond to ensure the best for your students. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had you as her teacher, and your positive influence will be remembered fondly for years to come."
