Transition to our Middle School

Transitioning from Junior School (Reception to Year 6) to Middle School (Year 7 and Year 8) at Westbourne can feel like a significant milestone, and we are committed to ensuring this transition is as seamless as possible.

A key advantage at Westbourne is that children will already be familiar with the majority of Middle School teachers, fostering a sense of security and confidence as they embark on this new phase.

We prioritise a cohesive educational journey, with close collaboration between Junior and Middle School staff.

This collaboration ensures a natural progression in learning, building upon the foundations established in Junior School and preparing pupils for the academic rigours of Middle School.  Teachers from both levels work together to create a connected curriculum, emphasising the key skills and knowledge required for success.  This collaborative approach also facilitates personalised learning, enabling teachers to understand and support each pupil's individual needs.

Beyond the academic curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on the social and emotional well-being of our pupils.  Opportunities for interaction with Middle School pupils and teachers are provided before the transition, fostering friendships and easing any anxieties.  We also offer workshops and information sessions for both pupils and parents.  Our overarching aim is to cultivate a supportive and nurturing environment where pupils feel connected, empowered, and excited to embrace the next stage of their education at Westbourne.

Individualised Learning & Pupil Progress

Westbourne School is proud to announce another strong set of GCSE results from our Year 11 pupils, who have demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination despite the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic during the early years of their secondary education.

94% of pupils achieved grade 4 or above, (National Average 67%) including the key subjects of English and Maths. Of all grades gained across the curriculum by all pupils, an impressive 45% were at level 7, 8 or 9 (A or A*), and 76% of all pupils gained at least one grade 7 (A).

This achievement underscores the dedication of our pupils and the unwavering support provided by our committed teaching staff.

Mr. Birbeck, Head of Senior School, expressed his pride in the pupils’ accomplishments:

"I am immensely proud of the achievements of all our Year 11 pupils, and I wish them every success as they leave Westbourne to pursue their post-16 studies at Sixth Forms and Colleges across Sheffield and beyond. Our intake is not academically selective, so to see such strong results from our wide range of pupils is a testament to their hard work and the inclusive, nurturing yet challenging environment that Westbourne provides."

We are confident that the skills, knowledge, and experiences pupils have gained from their education at Westbourne will serve them well as they embark on the next stage of their educational journeys.

We congratulate all our Year 11 pupils on their outstanding achievements and extend our thanks to our dedicated staff, supportive families, and the entire Westbourne community for their role in helping our pupils succeed and thrive.
