Academic Life

At Westbourne School, we strive to create an academic atmosphere that empowers pupils to take ownership of their learning journey. Our approach combines a structured and supportive curriculum with opportunities for personal growth, allowing pupils to thrive in both core subjects and specialised areas.

As pupils progress through Middle School, they develop critical thinking and independent study skills, all while being guided by dedicated teachers who foster a passion for learning. This balanced approach ensures that every pupil is well-prepared for the transition to GCSEs, where they can tailor their academic path to suit their interests and strengths, setting them up for long-term success.

Our Middle School curriculum focuses on building skills for learning through our unique Independent Study lessons and project work, alongside a broad and balanced curriculum of more “traditional” individual subjects. Core subjects are taught in streamed groups, and the remainder of the curriculum is delivered to small (max 16) mixed ability teaching groups.

In Year 9 pupils prepare to slim down their curriculum and begin their GCSE courses. We offer a completely free choice of optional subjects in addition to the core of English, Maths and Science, so every pupil can build their own individualised GCSE curriculum to match their strengths and interests.

We continue to teach core subjects in streamed groups to GCSE, and our bespoke curriculum means the teaching groups for other optional subjects are often smaller than 10 pupils (and never more than 16). Academic rigour and regular exam practice form the backbone of the curriculum, focusing on maximising GCSE success for every individual.
