World Book Day
At Westbourne School, World Book Day is always a highlight of the academic year, and this year was no exception. Across both Senior and Junior School, pupils embraced the joy of reading through creativity, competition and plenty of imagination.
The Masked Reader Competition
Over the past two weeks, Senior School pupils have been taking part in our interform competition, The Masked Reader. Tutor groups worked together to identify mystery teachers who were filmed reading excerpts from some of their favourite books.
It proved to be a closely fought contest, with plenty of speculation and detective work along the way. The winning tutor group was finally revealed in Thursday’s World Book Day assembly as Form Pursehouse / King.
Congratulations to all pupils who took part and approached the challenge with such enthusiasm.

Bento Box Reading Challenge
Key Stage 3 pupils were also set a wonderfully creative task: to represent one of their favourite books in the form of a bento box. Using carefully selected objects and visual clues, pupils created miniature scenes designed to hint at the story they had chosen.
English lessons this week were filled with lively discussion as classmates attempted to guess the titles from the imaginative displays. The English Department was extremely impressed by the time, thought and creativity that went into so many beautifully executed creations.
The first prize was awarded to Billy for his brilliant representation of The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. A number of runners-up were also selected, and certificates will be presented during our next celebration assembly.

A Bookish Day in the Junior School
Things got wonderfully bookish in the Junior School too.
We spotted Violet Beauregarde (also known as Miss Heath) blowing some very impressive bubble gum bubbles, Mr Bray making the entire building positively electric, and Mary Poppins herself flying in — otherwise known as Mrs Brocklebyrne, practically perfect in every way.

Our pupils entered into the spirit of World Book Day with panache, style and a great deal of imagination, bringing their favourite characters to life throughout the day.
A joyful celebration of storytelling, creativity and the power of books, World Book Day once again showed that when it comes to celebrating reading, the Westbourne community does it brilliantly
