Transition to our Senior School
Transitioning from Junior School (Reception to Year 6) to Senior School (Year 7) at Westbourne can feel like a significant milestone, and we are committed to ensuring this transition is as seamless as possible.
At Westbourne, we see transition to Senior School as a journey, not a single event. We’re committed to supporting your child every step of the way through a clear pathway of academic, extracurricular, and social activities that help them feel confident, connected, and ready for Senior School life.Dr Hounsome - Transition Coordinator

A key advantage at Westbourne is that children will already be familiar with the majority of Senior School teachers, fostering a sense of security and confidence as they embark on this new phase.
We prioritise a cohesive educational journey, with close collaboration between Junior and Senior School staff.
This collaboration ensures a natural progression in learning, building upon the foundations established in Junior School and preparing pupils for the academic rigours of Senior School. Teachers from both levels work together to create a connected curriculum, emphasising the key skills and knowledge required for success. This collaborative approach also facilitates personalised learning, enabling teachers to understand and support each pupil's individual needs.
Beyond the academic curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on the social and emotional well-being of our pupils. Opportunities for interaction with Senior School pupils and teachers are provided before the transition, fostering friendships and easing any anxieties. We also offer workshops and information sessions for both pupils and parents. Our overarching aim is to cultivate a supportive and nurturing environment where pupils feel connected, empowered, and excited to embrace the next stage of their education at Westbourne.

At Westbourne, the transition to Senior School goes well beyond academics, it’s about feeling part of a community. Alongside our structured academic pathway, we offer a vibrant programme of social events outside the school day, helping every pupil feel connected, valued, and truly at home. It’s not just preparation for Senior School life; it’s about finding a place where you belong.
