What if the world was your classroom?
At Westbourne School, learning doesn’t stop when pupils step outside the classroom. Our Outdoor Learning curriculum gives pupils the opportunity to explore, experiment and learn through real experiences in the natural environment, helping them develop skills and understanding that last well beyond their time outdoors.
We’re delighted to share our new Outdoor Learning film, offering a glimpse into the experiences our pupils enjoy throughout the year.
Learning comes alive in The Dell
At the heart of our Outdoor Learning provision is The Dell, our purpose-built, Grade II listed woodland. This unique space provides a natural classroom where pupils can explore nature, develop practical skills and learn through hands-on experiences.
Forest School is an integral part of our curriculum, rather than an add-on. Our youngest pupils through to Year 2 enjoy weekly Forest School sessions, where child-led exploration, experimentation and discovery help to develop curiosity and a deeper connection with nature.
For pupils in Years 3 to 6, our Outdoor Learning programme builds on this foundation, enhancing classroom-based learning through experiential sessions and trips inspired by Forest School principles.
Bringing learning to life
Outdoor Learning provides opportunities to make connections across the curriculum. Maths can involve measuring, calculating and problem-solving outdoors, while English can be inspired by the sights, sounds and experiences of the natural world. Science and History can become more meaningful through first-hand exploration, observation and practical activities.
Outdoor Learning also supports the development of important personal skills. Through working together, solving problems, taking responsibility and trying new things, pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence and teamwork.
Being immersed in nature regularly, throughout the year and in all weathers, helps pupils develop a sense of curiosity, care and connection with the world around them.
More than a lesson
Outdoor Learning is about more than what pupils learn. It is about how they learn and how they grow.
Whether they are building a shelter, learning to use tools safely, exploring habitats or simply taking time to notice the natural world around them, pupils are developing skills, confidence and memories that stay with them.
At Westbourne, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens when pupils are given the freedom to explore, experience and discover for themselves.
