Curiosity Sparks at Westbourne School Science Day

At Westbourne School, curiosity was the star of the show during this year’s Science Day, as pupils from both Junior and Senior School explored, experimented, and imagined the possibilities of the scientific world.

The day began with a lively assembly highlighting the intriguing questions that geologists, conservationists, and aerospace engineers ask, inspiring pupils to think like scientists and question the world around them.

Junior School children were treated to a fast-paced science magic show, led by Science Magician Mr Pritchard which explored phenomena such as why water doesn’t fall out of a spinning bucket and whether soft toys or Coca-Cola cans could be spun in a similar way.

Following the show, pupils participated in a fascinating bean workshop led by Mrs Campbell, where they investigated questions such as: What is inside a bean? How can a bean grow without soil? Why are beans healthy to eat? Each child planted beans to take home, continuing their scientific investigations beyond the classroom.

Senior School pupils took on the role of mentors and scientists, leading workshops and practical sessions for their younger peers. Reception pupils explored why cheetahs run so fast, while other Junior School students visited Senior School Science labs to discover answers to questions including What is the biggest fish in the world? How does the human brain work? How do we know the DNA of prehistoric animals?

Science Day at Westbourne School was a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking, demonstrating that asking questions is the first step to discovering the extraordinary in the everyday.
