White Ribbon Day 2025

25th November is an international day of awareness when people come together to stand up against violence towards women and girls.

As an official White Ribbon supporter, Westbourne School is committed to marking this day and raising awareness of the campaign within our school community.

On Tuesday, members of the school’s Equality Forum, alongside Mr Glover, delivered an assembly to Senior School pupils on the theme of this year’s campaign: We Speak Up.

Those children learned about the value of the campaign to everyone in our school community, wider society and what they can do to contribute. Children in Junior School received an age appropriate assembly, focusing on how demonstrating respect can be a way to speak up for others.

In addition to assemblies, Senior School children have been adding their names to a display that further demonstrates the commitment of the Westbourne School community to the cause.

Finally, Westbourne School was proud to take part in Sheffield City Council’s “Be the Change” White Ribbon Celebration Event, joining schools and leaders from across the city in demonstrating their commitment to ending violence against women and girls.

The event brought together speakers who have led successful pursuit of full White Ribbon accreditation for Sheffield City Council for a further 3 year. Their messages highlighted the vital role that schools and young people play in creating a culture of respect, equality and positive change.

Westbourne was represented by three pupils who embody our school’s values and commitment to the White Ribbon movement:

  • Max, our White Ribbon Ambassador

  • Lily, our White Ribbon Champion

  • Angel, our Head Student who represents our school value of Resilience

Hearing directly from city leaders gave our pupils an invaluable insight into why the White Ribbon campaign matters so deeply. The statistics shared about violence against women and girls in Sheffield were sobering, making it clear just how essential education, awareness and advocacy are in bringing about real, long-term change.

Our Safeguarding Lead, Sam Glover, also presented at the event alongside the pupils. He shared Westbourne’s commitment to the White Ribbon initiative and encouraged more schools to join the movement and seek accreditation. Their contribution was warmly received, helping to amplify the message that safeguarding and cultural change must be a shared responsibility across all educational settings.

Speakers included Meredith Dixon-Teasdale, currently the Strategic Director for Children’s Services at Sheffield City Council, and Councillor Dawn Dale, both of whom spoke powerfully about the importance of taking collective action to challenge attitudes and behaviours that enable violence against women and girls.

Westbourne School remains committed to championing respect, resilience and positive action—values that lie at the heart of the White Ribbon campaign. We are proud of our pupils for engaging so thoughtfully in this important work and look forward to continuing to make a difference within our school and the wider Sheffield community.
