Exploring Sheffield’s Past: Local History Humanities Day at Westbourne

Our exciting Local History Humanities Day took pupils on a vibrant and immersive journey through Sheffield’s rich heritage, blending creativity, curiosity and community spirit.

Throughout the day, children delved into a wide variety of activities designed to bring the city’s fascinating past to life. They explored the origins of football in Sheffield – the home of the world’s oldest football club – and expressed their artistic flair by creating still life artwork inspired by the iconic Henderson’s Relish.

A drama workshop led by Grow Theatre gave pupils the opportunity to step into the shoes of Sheffield’s past residents, performing and exploring stories rooted in our local community. History came alive as they unearthed the secrets of Sheffield Castle, piecing together the city’s mediaeval past.

Bringing the day to a lively close, pupils turned to music to reflect on Sheffield’s proud industrial heritage, writing and performing raps celebrating the city’s strong steel making roots.

It was a day filled with discovery, expression and fun – perfectly capturing the spirit of Humanities at Westbourne School.
