Blooms in the Cosmos

Blooms in the Cosmos at the Botanical Gardens, 18th June - 17th July, 2025.
Blooms in the Cosmos: A Year 8 Response to Yayoi Kusama
Westbourne School proudly presents Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos, an exhibition of joyful sculptures inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s Flower Series, set in the stunning surroundings of the Botanical Gardens. The exhibition draws from Kusama’s giant, triffid-like fibreglass sculptures, instantly recognisable for their striking colours and use of polka dots.
Flowers have been a lifelong passion for Kusama, and these works celebrate the cycles of new life and ultimate death.
'Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos' by Yayoi Kusama
The days I shed tears admiring the cosmos
In the cosmos I discovered flowers blooming
The happiness and joy
Of finding bouquets in the heavens
I want to share this passion with you
Let us rejoice together
Shouting out thanks to my flowers forever
From Earth with all my heart
Much like Kusama’s creations featuring spiralled stems, flamboyant blooms, and her ubiquitous spots, our Year 8 pupils have created their own imaginative interpretations using recycled plastic, cardboard, papier-mâché, and acrylic paint.
Enjoy these fun, expressive sculptures reflecting both creativity and sustainability.
