PE

At Westbourne, we believe in the power of sport to support the physical, mental and social development of every pupil. Our PE curriculum is designed to offer a broad and balanced range of activities that develop both practical skills and theoretical understanding. We aim to inspire a passion for physical activity that supports lifelong health and wellbeing.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

Pupils take part in a diverse selection of both team and individual sports. Team sports include football, basketball, lacrosse and cricket. Individual sports include cross-country running, swimming, gymnastics and athletics. Through these activities, pupils develop core movement skills, improve their fitness, and learn valuable lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

Pupils have the option to study GCSE PE, which offers a more in-depth exploration of the theoretical and practical aspects of physical activity and sport.

Our vision for PE at Westbourne is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead healthy, active lives. We are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every pupil is encouraged to participate, regardless of ability. We believe in the lifelong benefits of sport and aim to foster enjoyment, confidence and resilience through physical activity—both in and beyond school.

Pupils benefit from access to a wide range of exceptional sporting venues across Sheffield, including the English Institute of Sport, Swim!, and King Edward’s Swimming Pool. Cross-country routes include local Parkrun courses and the stunning Peak District, providing diverse and inspiring learning environments.

Sports Scholars also participate in a dedicated annual programme, including sports testing, visits to the English Institute of Sport to enhance their knowledge of nutrition and exercise, and leadership opportunities such as delivering assemblies on the importance of health and fitness.
