Building Confidence, Achieving Excellence in Mathematics

At Westbourne, our Middle School mathematics curriculum is designed to foster a love of learning and build strong mathematical foundations for all pupils. The curriculum covers a wide range of essential topics, including:

  • Number: Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, negative numbers, and their operations. We emphasise mental math skills, written calculations, and the effective use of calculators.
  • Algebra: Introduction to algebraic concepts, including variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities. Pupils will learn to solve equations, graph linear relationships, and apply algebraic thinking to real-world problems.
  • Geometry: Exploring shapes and their properties, including 2D and 3D shapes, angles, lines, symmetry, transformations (rotations, reflections, translations, enlargements), and constructions. Pupils will also cover concepts such as perimeter, area, volume, and Pythagoras' Theorem.
  • Data Handling & Probability: Collecting, organising, and analysing data using various methods, including averages, range, and graphs. Pupils will also learn about probability concepts and how to calculate and interpret probabilities.

Our approach emphasises practical applications of mathematics, encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios and solve problems creatively. We aim to build confidence and enjoyment in mathematics, ensuring that all pupils achieve their full potential.

GCSE Mathematics Curriculum Overview

At Westbourne School, our GCSE Mathematics curriculum is designed to foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and to equip pupils with the skills and confidence they need to excel.

The Edexcel GCSE Mathematics curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics, and probability. Pupils will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are essential for success in further education and beyond. Additionally, pupils in Set 1 each year have the opportunity to study for the Further Mathematics Level 2 qualification from AQA.

We believe in nurturing individual potential and providing tailored support. In collaboration with pupils and parents, we carefully consider the most suitable tier of entry for the GCSE exams, ensuring that each pupil has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their personal best. To support this, pupils in Years 10 and 11 will receive regular past paper homework on a three-week cycle. The first week focuses on completing half of a past paper, with the remaining half due the following week. In the third week, pupils will either self-mark their work using official mark schemes or have their work marked by their teacher.

Our aim is to cultivate an understanding of the importance of mathematical skills and to empower pupils to become confident and effective mathematicians.
