Modern Foreign Languages

The study of French and Spanish at Westbourne fosters critical thinking, improves problem-solving abilities, and deepens global understanding. All of our pupils gain practical communication skills and many continue their language studies after GCSE.

At Westbourne School, in Middle School (Years 7-8), pupils study both Spanish and French, building the foundations of language that will allow them to begin communicating confidently. Through varied activities, pupils are exposed to language in a way that builds knowledge and supports retention of vocabulary.

In Senior School (Years 9-11), Year 9 pupils begin the GCSE curriculum, which introduces them to the content and structure of the AQA GCSE. Lessons are taught in a mixture of English and the target language, allowing pupils to hear as much spoken language as possible while keeping lessons accessible to all learners. In the Summer term of Year 9, pupils can choose to continue with either or both languages to continue at GCSE level.

  • French: Opal Coast trip (September, Years 7-11)
  • Spanish: Cantabria (June, Years 7-10)

Trips run in alternate years to give all pupils a chance to attend both trips during their time at Westbourne.
