Food Preparation and Nutrition

Food Technology is an exciting and creative subject with focus not only on practical skills but also on the development of a sound understanding of nutrition

At Westbourne School, Food Technology builds knowledge across five key areas:

  1. Food, Nutrition and Health
  2. Food Science
  3. Food Safety
  4. Food Choice
  5. Food Provenance

Practical work is introduced in the first term, covering essential skills such as:

  • Knife skills
  • Cooking methods
  • Use of equipment

There is a strong emphasis on practical work and learning through investigation. Pupils engage in exciting projects, applying their learning and building technical skills. Practical work is tailored to the skill level of each pupil, progressing throughout the year to include:

  • Sauce-making
  • Raising agents

This approach enables pupils to develop a comprehensive understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of food technology. With each lesson, pupils build confidence in the kitchen, fostering creativity and independent learning while reinforcing their knowledge of food science, safety, and health
