Engineering
Engineering combines the principles of mathematics and science to solve real-world problems through innovation and design.
At Westbourne School, we offer a dynamic GCSE Engineering course that introduces students to the exciting world of mechanical engineering. This course provides a hands-on, practical approach to understanding engineering concepts, preparing pupils to apply their skills in real-world situations. Throughout the course, pupils will explore key areas of engineering, including materials, manufacturing processes, and systems design, while developing critical problem-solving abilities.
The course is divided into six core topic areas:
- Engineering Materials
- Manufacturing Processes
- Systems
- Testing and Investigation
- The Impact of Modern Engineering
- âPractical Engineering Skills
Assessment is made up of a final exam (60%) and an NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) project (40%), ensuring that pupils develop both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.
As this is a new course at Westbourne, we are continually developing opportunities to enhance our students' learning through industry visits and hands-on projects. These experiences allow pupils to connect their academic studies with real-world engineering applications.
