Engineering

Engineering combines the principles of mathematics and science to solve real-world problems through innovation and design.

At Westbourne School, we offer a dynamic GCSE Engineering course that introduces students to the exciting world of mechanical engineering. This course provides a hands-on, practical approach to understanding engineering concepts, preparing pupils to apply their skills in real-world situations. Throughout the course, pupils will explore key areas of engineering, including materials, manufacturing processes, and systems design, while developing critical problem-solving abilities.

The course is divided into six core topic areas:

  • Engineering Materials
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Systems
  • Testing and Investigation
  • The Impact of Modern Engineering
  • ​Practical Engineering Skills

Assessment is made up of a final exam (60%) and an NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) project (40%), ensuring that pupils develop both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.

 

As this is a new course at Westbourne, we are continually developing opportunities to enhance our students' learning through industry visits and hands-on projects. These experiences allow pupils to connect their academic studies with real-world engineering applications.

  • Kelham Island Industrial Museum – A fascinating look at the history of engineering and industrial heritage.

  • University of Sheffield (Danger Lab) – Students explore cutting-edge research and engineering technologies in a university setting.

  • Drax Power Station – A visit to one of the UK's largest power stations, providing insight into energy production and engineering systems.

  • Yorkshire Air Museum – Pupils learn about aviation engineering and the history of flight.

  • Elvington Airfield – A thrilling day of flying rockets and racing rocket cars, testing engineering designs in a competitive environment.

Future Trips Include:

  • UKROC Rocket Competition – A national competition where students will have the opportunity to design and launch their own rockets.

  • Manchester Technical Museum – An immersive look at technological advancements in engineering.

  • National Coal Mining Museum – A hands-on experience exploring the engineering behind the mining industry.

  • Hull Infrastructure Walk and Survey – An on-site study of civil engineering and urban infrastructure.

  • AMRC Visit – A tour of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre to see cutting-edge engineering techniques.

Future Projects:

  • Sand Casting – Students will design and create castings, learning about material properties and manufacturing techniques.

  • Structural Kites – A project to design, build, and test kites, applying engineering principles to aerodynamics and structure.
