Music

Music is a subject where pupils build confidence through creativity and collaboration.

Middle School

At Westbourne, all pupils in the Middle School enjoy one music lesson each week. The curriculum is diverse, covering a wide range of musical genres. Throughout the year, pupils study six different topics, which include a variety of musical styles and techniques. Pupils are encouraged to perform on a range of instruments, compose using their instrumental skills and music technology, and build their knowledge and understanding of music through listening and appraising.

GCSE

In Year 9, pupils begin to build their skills in preparation for GCSE-level studies. They are introduced to some of the key topics in the GCSE specification, while also being encouraged to work both independently and in groups.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils work through the Areas of Study outlined in the GCSE specification. They further develop their listening and appraising skills, preparing for the final written paper at the end of Year 11. Each pupil is required to create two compositions and deliver two performances, which are recorded for exam submission. Throughout the course, pupils regularly perform their work to their peers, fostering a collaborative environment where they can share good practice and provide constructive feedback to improve each other's work.

The music department is an active and vibrant part of the school, with rehearsals and extra-curricular activities taking place daily.
