Computer Science
Technology shapes every aspect of the way we live and work today
At Westbourne School, our pupils understand that mastering how computers influence our daily lives is crucial for their future careers. We don't simply teach how to use computers; we delve deeper, exploring the inner workings of these machines to build confidence and a comprehensive understanding of what a computer truly is. As computer programming is one of the most in-demand skills in today's workforce, our pupils learn Python, the fastest-growing industry standard programming language.
Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils will progressively build their programming skills, develop an understanding of online safety, and become proficient in using office software, which is essential for both work and everyday life.
In Key Stage 4, pupils will build on the knowledge gained in Key Stage 3 and apply it towards preparing for the GCSE Computer Science qualification.
Bletchley Park: Every other year, we take Year 7 and Year 8 pupils on a trip to Bletchley Park, where they can discover the remarkable achievements of Britain's World War Two codebreakers in the very place where it happened.
Code/STEM Club: Senior school pupils are invited to attend Code/STEM Club every Tuesday after school. Here, they can enhance their programming skills and collaborate with the engineering department to develop their CAD skills.
CyberFirst Girls Competition: This national competition offers a fun yet challenging environment that encourages the next generation of young women to consider a career in cyber security.
Perse Coding Team Challenge: This national competition tests pupils' programming skills across two rounds, with the chance to win prize money and the Braben Cup.
Safer Internet Day: Westbourne School participates annually in activities to raise awareness about the importance of online safety, ensuring that pupils are well-informed about how to navigate the digital world safely.
