At Westbourne we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience, which will lay the foundation for future language learning
Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
French is introduced as a foundational language. The emphasis is on creating a fun and engaging environment where pupils are exposed to the French language through so#ngs, games, and interactive activities. Key themes explored include greetings, colours, numbers, family, food, animals, body parts, as well as French culture and festivals.
Key Stage 2
French lessons focus on developing core language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Pupils learn essential vocabulary and grammatical structures, which serve as the foundation for more advanced language learning. Cultural awareness is also nurtured, with pupils exploring French-speaking countries and cultures, helping them develop an understanding of cultural similarities and differences.
At Westbourne, we aim to create a positive and engaging learning environment, which is essential for fostering a love of French. When pupils enjoy the learning process, they are more likely to absorb and retain the language, setting them on the path for continued success.
