PE
Westbourne Junior School's Physical Education program is delivered by specialist teachers from Reception to Year 6. Our engaging and developmentally appropriate curriculum focuses on building a strong foundation of fundamental movement skills, fostering a love of physical activity, and encouraging lifelong healthy habits.
At Westbourne School, we are committed to providing a comprehensive and engaging PE curriculum that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and a lifelong enjoyment of sport. Our approach to PE encourages the development of fundamental movement skills in our youngest learners and builds on these skills as pupils progress through the school, enabling them to participate in a wide range of physical activities.
Reception
Our youngest learners experience a variety of activities aimed at developing fundamental movement skills. These include crawling, rolling, jumping, and throwing, with age-appropriate games and activities designed to enhance coordination, balance, and agility. The focus is on encouraging movement in a fun and supportive environment, allowing children to develop their physical confidence and motor skills.
Year 1 & 2 (Key Stage 1)
In Key Stage 1, children build on their early experiences and explore a range of activities designed to further develop their physical skills. These include:
- Ball Skills: Developing control and coordination with different-sized balls through activities like throwing, catching, kicking, and dribbling.
- Uni Hock: A fun and engaging game that promotes agility, teamwork, and hand-eye coordination.
- Movement: Exploring various ways to move, including skipping, hopping, jumping, and leaping.
- Lacrosse: Introducing basic lacrosse skills such as throwing, catching, and cradling.
- Throws, Jumps, and Runs: Developing speed, power, and accuracy through a variety of activities.
- Short Tennis: Introducing basic tennis skills in a modified format, focusing on fun and engagement.
Year 3 & 4 (Key Stage 2)
In Key Stage 2, pupils continue to develop their skills and explore a broader range of sports. These include:
- Cross Country: Developing cardiovascular fitness and endurance through running and navigating varied terrains.
- Basketball: Learning the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting.
- Gymnastics: Enhancing flexibility, strength, and coordination through a variety of gymnastic activities.
- Lacrosse: Further developing lacrosse skills and playing simple games.
- Athletics: Participating in track and field events, including sprints, jumps, and throws.
- Tennis: Building on the skills leaned in Key Stage 1, pupils develop more advanced tennis skills and strategies.
- Throughout the PE programme, we emphasise the importance of teamwork, fair play, and healthy competition. Our goal is to create a positive, inclusive environment where all pupils can enjoy the benefits of physical activity and develop a lifelong love of sport.
Our Key Stage 2 pupils benefit from access to a range of exceptional sporting venues across Sheffield, including:
- English Institute of Sport
- Swim!
- King Edward's Swimming Pool
Cross-country routes incorporate local ParkRun courses and the stunning Peak District, providing diverse and inspiring environments for outdoor learning and physical activity.
Our Junior School Sports Day offers an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all pupils. The event is designed with races and activities that allow every child to participate and succeed. Integrated into our House System, the Sports Day provides a platform for pupils to represent their House and embody the spirit of our school values, fostering a sense of community and friendly competition.
