Humanities (History, Geography and Religious Education & Worldviews)
At Westbourne, our teaching of History, Geography, and Religious Education & Worldviews inspires curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of diverse cultures, beliefs, and the world around us
At Westbourne, Humanities is taught through the KAPOW scheme, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging approach to the study of History, Geography, and Religion & World views.
History
In History, pupils develop an understanding of chronological narratives and significant global events. We build their conceptual knowledge through topics such as continuity, change, and abstract terms like 'civilisation'. Critical historical enquiry skills are fostered, enabling pupils to evaluate evidence and interpretations of the past.
Geography
Geography focusses on building locational knowledge, understanding places through comparisons and connections. Pupils explore human and physical geography, explaining environments and developing skills in map reading and fieldwork. We also examine the impact of human activities, including climate change, on the Earth’s systems.
Religion & World Views
Westbourne believes that understanding different world views is crucial for navigating today’s diverse world. The Religious Education (RE) curriculum encourages pupils to explore fundamental questions such as 'Why are we here?' and 'How do world views shape our lives?' Pupils study a variety of world views, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Humanism. Through this, they develop critical thinking skills and respect for diverse perspectives. Our approach promotes open dialogue and reflection, preparing pupils to engage in respectful discussions about religion and beliefs.
The History, Geography, and RE curriculum is enriched through a range of exciting trips and activities. These include Archaeology and History clubs, Roman residentials, object handling, and museum curation. Pupils benefit from outdoor learning opportunities, exploring historical sites and engaging in fieldwork, as well as visits to places of worship to deepen their understanding of diverse cultures and beliefs.
Additionally, themed Humanities days are organised to provide immersive learning experiences. These may include events such as geography-themed “One World” days, celebrations of historical milestones like the 1960s or 80th D-Day commemorations, and our annual Remembrance service. These events offer pupils the chance to engage with global and local heritage, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to the world around them.
