Maths

Our mathematics curriculum empowers children to reach their full potential, enriched by the White Rose Maths Scheme to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

At Westbourne School, the Mathematics curriculum is delivered in a structured and engaging manner, focusing on developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. We use a range of schemes of learning to ensure consistent progression and mastery of key skills across all year groups.

Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)

In Key Stage 1, Mathematics focuses on developing a strong foundation in number, calculation, and problem-solving. Pupils learn to recognise numbers, count, and perform basic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also explore shapes, measurement, and simple data handling. Throughout this stage, pupils develop the ability to solve practical problems and use mathematical language to explain their reasoning and thinking processes.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, Mathematics builds on the skills developed in Key Stage 1, with an increased emphasis on more complex number operations, including multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Pupils also deepen their understanding of geometry, measurement, and statistics. They are encouraged to apply problem-solving strategies across a variety of contexts. The focus is on developing fluency, reasoning, and the ability to solve multi-step problems, ensuring pupils are well-prepared for more advanced mathematical concepts as they progress in their education.

To enrich the Mathematics curriculum, we incorporate a variety of engaging events and activities.

These include:

  • NSPCC Number Day - A fun and interactive day that focuses on numeracy skills while raising awareness for the NSPCC.

  • TTRockstars Day - A celebration of learning times tables through the popular TTRockstars platform, encouraging friendly competition and skill development.

  • Junior Maths Conundrum - A challenge day where pupils engage in problem-solving activities, applying their mathematical knowledge to real-world scenarios.

These events are designed to further enrich pupils' understanding of Mathematics, foster a love for the subject, and provide opportunities for practical application in exciting and interactive settings.
