Dr Jonathon Hounsome
Interim Head of Middle School
I am passionate about fostering a love of learning in young people and providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed.
I am currently a Year 6 teacher at Westbourne School, a position I have held since 2022. Alongside this role, I am also the Interim Head of Middle School (Years 7 & 8), the English Curriculum Coordinator, and the EAL Coordinator. I am passionate about fostering a love of learning in young people and providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed.
My path to teaching was not a direct one. I grew up in Essex before spending eight years in Scotland, where I obtained my BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Glasgow. This was followed by four years in Switzerland working in the pharmaceutical industry. While I valued this experience, I ultimately felt drawn to the rewarding challenge of education.
My commitment to supporting others extends beyond the classroom. I volunteered for several years as a listening volunteer at Samaritans, an experience which provided me with valuable insights into human resilience. I also hold a Higher Education Certificate in Counselling from Birkbeck University.
Outside of school, I enjoy a variety of activities, including playing board games, reading, and going to the gym. I love spending time with my partner and son; we enjoy going for walks in the Peaks as often as possible.
