From Tramlines to the Royal Albert Hall: Jack’s Journey to Performing for Thousands
Jack’s passion for music ignited in Year 3 when encouragement from the Westbourne School music department led him to take up piano lessons. That first step opened the door to a lifelong love of music. Since then, he has expanded his talents, mastering drums, orchestral percussion, and bass guitar performing regularly in concerts and ensembles.
“My passion for music began when I was in Year 3, I decided to take piano lessons after encouragement from my teacher, and I’ve been playing ever since. I also became interested in playing drums, orchestral percussion, and bass guitar, all of which I now perform regularly.”
Westbourne School provided Jack with opportunities to develop his confidence and performance skills. From playing in assemblies and at informal concerts to performing at Gig Night and being part of the pit orchestra for the annual school show, Jack embraced every opportunity that came his way.
“It’s a great starting point, as it gives you the feel of a real audience,” Jack reflects. “These experiences really helped me build confidence and prepare for bigger stages.”
His dedication and hard work have led to some incredible achievements, including performing on the main stage at Tramlines in July 2024 as part of the Leadmill Studio Orchestra project and playing at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2024 with the South Yorkshire Orchestral Collective.
“Both performances were unforgettable, they had the biggest audiences I’ve ever played to over 2,000 people! The excitement and sense of achievement were incredible.”
Jack’s musical journey has been supported every step of the way by his family, especially his mum, Kate, who has watched him grow into a talented and confident musician.
“Jack started playing the piano in Year 3 after it was suggested by his Junior School music teacher,” Kate recalls. “From the beginning, he enjoyed performing in assemblies, concerts, and events like Gig Night at Yellow Arch in Year 5. These experiences built his confidence and encouraged him to explore more instruments.”
Beyond Westbourne, Jack has taken his passion further, joining the Sheffield Youth Orchestra, City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra, and various Sheffield Music Hub activities. These have given him opportunities to perform at some of Sheffield’s most iconic venues, including the Crucible Theatre in Monster in the Maze and at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
“Sheffield has an amazing youth music scene, and Jack has made the most of it. The opportunities he’s had have been fantastic, from playing alongside professional musicians to experiencing life in a real orchestra.”

Looking ahead, Jack has ambitious goals for his musical future.
“My dream is to become a respected musician in South Yorkshire and the UK,” he says. “I’d love to play in pit bands, orchestras, and many different groups professionally.”
Jack’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the right opportunities. With the strong foundation he has built at Westbourne and beyond, his future in music looks incredibly bright.
"At Westbourne, we take immense pride in nurturing the unique talents of every pupil. Jack’s journey is a shining example of how our school provides the encouragement, opportunities, and support for young musicians to thrive. From early performances in assemblies to playing on some of the UK's most prestigious stages, Jack’s story reflects the confidence, dedication, and creativity that Westbourne inspires in all our pupils."
