Welcome to Junior School (aged 4-11)

Here our children thrive in this academic yet supportive and nurturing environment. All children learn differently and we treat all our pupils as individuals. We ensure our children are engaged and excited by their education. They are happy, confident, fun loving, and energetic. Pupils at Westbourne relish a challenge and always try to be the very best that they can be.

We develop your child to the very best of their abilities

Junior School is for Reception to Year 6.
We offer small class sizes and have excellent facilities including a large art studio, IT suite, science lab, a purpose built music studio and several playgrounds. Children also have access to Senior School facilities including our drama studio, the outdoor ‘Dell’ ampitheatre and our purpose-built food technology area.

Our teachers are specialists in teaching junior children and this is their passion.

All Junior School children are involved in their very own Westbourne Journey where their efforts and contributions are recognised in the three foundations of effort, citizenship and school community.

As our children grow and develop on their journey through Key stage 1 and 2 they become familiar with staff who will teach them in Years 7 and 8 when they transfer into our Senior School. This again allows our children to flourish and work confidently; making the most of the many varied and new opportunities available to them.

Children are at the centre of all that happens in our school and a seamless progression from one year to the next is enabled by the the high standards of planning and leadership coupled with the holistic pastoral concern of committed and highly skilled staff.

Music, sport and performance have a high profile at Westbourne and contribute hugely to children's personal development and the culture of endeavour, teamwork and positive values.

Subject specialists work with all our girls and boys from Pre-School through to Year 6 in Music, PE, Drama and French, this ensures a rapid progression and application of skills. Music, PE and ICT are taught in half class groups for the benefit that personal tutoring and attention brings in these formative years.

We encourage all our girls and boys to learn to play a musical instrument from Year 2 onwards. From Year 3 onwards each girl and boy will play for the school in a sports team each year.

Westbourne offers sports and music tours and residential opportunities in the UK and abroad from Year 3 upwards, as part of our age appropriate and progression KS2 residential programme. Our Easter and Summer schools offer advanced skills in Food Technology and Performing Arts. This extended curriculum bridges the Junior and Senior Schools and supports our family identity.

Outside of the classroom children in Junior School share a variety of inspirational settings and learning environments.

Music, sport, drama and leadership opportunities are developed and honed at the many excellent and varied facilities that Sheffield has to offer. On campus, our children, from Pre-School onwards, can enjoy forest school provision in the historic Dell in Ashdell House which forms the basis of their wider outdoor learning journey across KS1 and KS2. We aim to inspire each young mind, fire every imagination and, in conjunction with our effective pastoral system, to ensure all our pupils;

• display and demonstrate resilience and perseverance

• take personal responsibility for decisions and actions

• be encouraged to take risks in a safe environment

• appreciate the differences between individuals and cultures

In time, all our Junior School pupils are ready for the exciting transition to our Senior School and the challenges and opportunities that await them in KS3, KS4 and beyond.

We receive many positive comments throughout the year!

Here are just a few of them:

"We are writing to express our deepest gratitude for the exceptional care and dedication you have shown to our daughter over the past two years. Your commitment to her education and personal growth has made a significant impact on her development, and I am truly thankful for your efforts. These two years have been particularly critical for her and under your guidance, she has developed her confidence significantly. The patience and encouragement you have provided have been instrumental in her progress, and it has been a joy to see her thrive under your guidance. Additionally, we are especially grateful for your help with her English, which can be challenging for a family that does not originally speak the language. Thank you for your unwavering support, understanding, and the countless ways you have gone above and beyond to ensure the best for your students. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had you as her teacher, and your positive influence will be remembered fondly for years to come. "

"We just loved Westbourne, the whole family. Westbourne managed to foster a love of learning at the same time as getting outstanding results. There really is a Westbourne Way. "

Former Parent

"As a parent new to Westbourne, I wanted to feedback to you how impressed I have been by your PE/ games staff. My children previously attended two different private schools and neither had a sports department as impressive as what I have seen so far within Westbourne. The organisation and atmosphere at the Westbourne wheeze, house rugby, school matches and swimming gala were all excellent. All these events manage to be both competitive but also inclusive and not too serious!"
