Our new GCSE engineering course offers a unique blend of academic study and practical experience. While you'll delve into the theoretical aspects of engineering, such as materials, manufacturing processes, systems, testing, and the broader impact of engineering on our world, you'll also have the opportunity to apply these concepts in real-world projects.
Using cutting-edge tools like 3D modeling software and 3D printers, you'll design, build, and test your own creations, from model rockets to programmable robots. This hands-on approach will not only reinforce your understanding of engineering principles but also develop essential skills like problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork.
In addition, we are currently speaking to the University of Sheffield about possible outreach opportunities and have a full many exciting off-site opportunities planned for hands-on engineering experiences.
The GCSE engineering course is off to a flying start, combining academic and practical learning experiences. In this first half term, pupils have been learning about engineering materials, exploring their properties, costs, and supply chain dynamics. They’ve also been examining the factors that influence the design of effective solutions.
Meanwhile, practical skills have been honed through the use of OnShape, a powerful 3D modeling program. Collaborative teamwork has been central to the course, as students have worked together to design, build, and test model rockets in preparation for the UKROC national / international youth rocket competition (regional finals March 2025).
The department’s equipment holdings have also grown, with the addition of two more 3D printers (three in total) and the arrival of our first programmable robot…welcome Albert. These new tools are enhancing the learning experience and providing students with valuable hands-on opportunities.
The department has also been talking to the University of Sheffield about potential outreach learning opportunities – i.e. materials testing in a real engineering laboratory!
