Westbourne School Supports Youth Mental Health Day 2024: Promoting Positive Mental Health in a Digital Age

Youth Mental Health Day 2024: A Day of Hope and Action

The mental health of young people has become a growing concern in recent times, with a significant rise in mental health issues among youth. According to NHS Digital (November 2023), 1 in 5 children and young people presented with a probable mental health disorder last year. Despite this, only a third of those affected were able to access effective treatment. While the challenges remain, Youth Mental Health Day (YMHD) offers hope by actively engaging young people in discussions and activities that aim to improve mental health. More than just raising awareness, YMHD seeks to break the stigma surrounding mental health and empower young people to take charge of their own wellbeing.

Navigating the Digital Landscape: A Double-Edged Sword

The rapid evolution of the digital landscape has dramatically transformed how young people experience the world. The ability to instantly connect with peers, showcase creativity, and access endless entertainment and information are some of the many benefits of the online world. However, this digital age also brings significant challenges. A recent survey by stem4 found that 93% of young people reported feeling scared by online content, with concerns about disinformation, online scams, bullying, and harmful imagery topping the list.

Recognising the need for more guidance on navigating these challenges, YMHD 2024 has been dedicated to the theme #ControlYourScroll. This theme aims to provide young people with practical digital hacks and mental health strategies to create a safer and more positive online experience.

Westbourne School’s Commitment to Mental Health: Empowering Pupils

At Westbourne School, we are committed to supporting our pupils’ mental health. On Youth Mental Health Day, Mr Glover, our Designated Safeguarding Lead, will be leading assemblies focused on equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely. Through these sessions, pupils will learn how to identify online risks, manage their digital consumption, and use social media in ways that support their mental wellbeing. View Mr Glover’s video here.

Youth Mental Health Day serves as an important reminder of the power of community and education in addressing mental health issues. By engaging in honest conversations and practical activities, Westbourne School is proud to stand with our pupils in fostering a healthier, happier future.

Westbourne School aims to work together to give young people the tools they need to thrive in today’s digital age. Control Your Scroll. Access resources here.

In support of Youth Mental Health Day and the theme of #ControlYourScroll, Westbourne School is introducing PHONEFREEFOR48, a voluntary digital detox challenge. From 4pm on Wednesday 18th September to 4pm on Friday 20th September, pupils will be invited to go smartphone-free. This initiative aims to promote digital well-being by encouraging pupils to explore alternative activities that enhance focus, physical and mental health, and strengthen social connections.

Your choice. Their future.
