Westbourne Word Edition 22: A Summer Farewell and New Beginnings

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Westbourne Word!

As the final term concludes and the summer holidays begin, many things are changing at Westbourne. We are bidding a heartfelt farewell to Mr. Hattam and witnessing the advent of a new government. This edition is packed with thought-provoking articles, including a debate on whether the voting age should be lowered and an analysis of how VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is influencing football.

Our editorial team is eager to expand, and we would love to see more pupils from Year 9 and Year 10 join us. Your fresh perspectives and creative ideas are vital to keeping the Westbourne Word vibrant and engaging.

Articles in Focus:

Philosophy’s Quirky Side: Diogenes the Cynic

Philosophy can be weird, sometimes incredibly simple or utterly mind-bending. One fascinating philosopher is Diogenes the Cynic, who lived simply and without shame, rejecting wealth and all worldly possessions. Known for his public stunts and philosophical musings, Diogenes once famously retorted to Alexander the Great, “Stand out of my sunlight.” His life and antics continue to provoke thought and laughter even today.

The Everlasting Quest for Cleopatra’s Tomb

Cleopatra ruled Egypt during a time of immense change, navigating the complexities of Roman politics to secure her kingdom’s independence. After her death in 30 BC, the location of her tomb remains one of history’s greatest mysteries. Despite numerous expeditions and modern technological advances, Cleopatra’s final resting place eludes archaeologists. The search continues to captivate the world, driven by the hope of uncovering more about her life and legacy.
