WHAT makes the perfect poem? Our Year 6 and 7 children tested their use of language when they celebrated National Poetry Day.
A love of language and literature is at the very heart of our English department.
And that enthusiasm for words encourages pupils to express themselves with clarity, originality and flair – all the things needed by budding poets.
Year 6 and Year 7 students – along with guest visitors from Hallam and Nether Green Primary Schools – took part in two different poetry workshops based on an environmental theme, completing a nature hunt and producing poems based on their observations.
They also recycled junk mail and old packages to create pieces of environment friendly poetry, with Danny Pudil of Year 7 and Lucy Johnson of Year 6 selected as the outstanding poets of the day.
“We were incredibly impressed with the high standard of all the poems entered,” said our Head of English Charlotte Smith.
“There was some wonderful use of imagery, personification and rhyme, alongside lots of very thoughtful ideas.”
