Book Onto Our Autumn Series Of Open Events! Find Out About Scholarships!
Year 8 pupils had an exciting opportunity to participate in a CSI-style Forensic Science event designed to showcase the critical role science plays in the criminal justice system. The scenario they tackled involved a break-in at the school, during which the caretaker was assaulted and computers were stolen.
The day began at the simulated crime scene, where pupils took on the role of Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs). Dressed in white coverall suits, masks, gloves, and overshoes, they meticulously searched for and retrieved evidence left behind by the perpetrator(s).
Next, the pupils stepped into the shoes of forensic scientists, conducting a series of investigations that included identifying shoe marks, performing ink analysis using chromatography, comparing documents, and analysing blood patterns. Each activity helped them understand the scientific methods used to solve crimes.
Once their evidence was collected and analysed, the pupils transitioned to the courtroom, taking on roles such as the accused, barrister, forensic witness, judge, police officer, and usher. This engaging mock trial culminated in a verdict where the suspect was found guilty of all charges, reinforcing the significance of forensic science in the legal process.
This hands-on experience not only provided Year 8 with valuable insights into forensic science but also fostered teamwork and critical thinking skills, making it a memorable and educational day at Westbourne School.
