Understanding the world around us is important at any age

At Westbourne we believe that Geography is a fascinating and varied subject which helps pupils to enquire about the environment in which they live.

Our studies develop a number of different skills including describing and analysing data, understanding map and encouraging attitudes and views. Our aim is to promote a love of Geography, both Human and Physical. All pupils study Geography in Year 7 and 8 and 9 after which it becomes an optional subject. And at every age we believe that a practical approach is both fun and informative, which is why we offer a full programme of field events, bringing Geography to life.

Through Geography teaching in Junior School, children gain an understanding of places and environments. They learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions of the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. They learn how to draw and interpret maps and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. We have a ‘World Culture Day’ every other year to promote this. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world and enables them to recognise the importance of looking after our environment and sustainable development for the future of mankind.

Your choice. Their future.
