Westbourne isn’t just any school

At Westbourne our gifted and talented pupils are known as higher achieving pupils (HAPs)

Higher achieving pupils (HAPs)

In our school we aim to provide a curriculum that is appropriate to the needs and abilities of all our children. We plan our teaching and learning in such a way that we enable each child to reach for the highest level of personal achievement. We recognise and support the needs of those children in our school who have been identified as more able according to national guidelines, and at Westbourne we aim to:

  • ensure that we recognise and support the needs of our more able children;
  • enable children to develop to their full potential;
  • offer children opportunities to generate their own learning;
  • ensure that we challenge and extend the children through the work that we set them;
  • Encourage children to think and work independently.

In each subject differentiated work is available for our more able pupils.These opportunities take place both in the classroom and in extra curricula activities including entering national and local competitions. Some of our higher-achieving pupils in English for instance have gained national recognition in essay and as critics.

Year 11 Science Extension Activity

Higher paper science students went to the University of Sheffield last term for a talk on Astrobiology with Dr Simon Goodwin.

The pupils discussed the scientific techniques used for finding extra-solar planets, and the possibility of finding life on other worlds. This lecture provided an opportunity for our
more able scientists to develop their understanding, and to experience Physics and Biology in a university setting.
