War Poem
Worn out, our faces showed everything,
We couldn’t carry on; the state of us was terrible.
We marched to safety, leaving the
Loud noises of rattling machine guns behind
Our men where limping along, covered in
Bandages and bruises, legs wobbling
We didn't even hear the Five-nines behind us.
Everybody watch out poison gas, poison gas!
We were fumbling to get our masks on
One man didn’t manage in time he cried out,
Inhaling the evil gas.
The gas was so thick it covered everywhere,
Like fog, but green
I will never forget the man running through the gas towards me,
Coughing from his flooded lungs
Just think if you were behind the wagon seeing him, could you imagine what it felt like?
I couldn’t bear the noise.
After all I’ve told you would you really
Think it is proud to die for ones country?
