Year 1 are currently learning about castles in humanities. On Thursday 11th October to supplement this curriculum learning, Year 1 went into the woods to collect materials they could use to make their own model of a motte and bailey castle. Once we had awoken our enthusiasm for being outdoors through a quick game of ‘Winter Dragon’, and once we had all made ‘Leaf Angels, we put ourselves to the task of finding suitable sticks to make our castle walls and organising said sticks into 3 different thicknesses. We then transported these into the fantastic new mud kitchen area behind preschool where there is a new sand pit. Mr Magenty explained the different features of a Motte and Bailey castle. We all worked together to make the ‘motte’ using the sand from the perimeter ditch to make the motte, the way the Normans did. Finally we worked in teams to build the different aspects of the castle.
After we finished and in the true Forest Schools way, we made sure to leave no trace of our being there and tidied all of our mess!
We all had a great time and enjoyed a well-deserved lunch, ready to continue our learning in the classroom in the afternoon.
