An Indian Easter
While our students were tucking into their Easter eggs and enjoying the Easter break,
Year 3 teacher Kate Whitmore was travelling to India to help out in a school. Mrs
Whitmore has been supporting the school in Bangalore for 18 months, sending resources,
lesson plans and helping with funding but decided to take the next step and
take a trip out there to teach English.
The school is set up for children that would otherwise be put into forced labour. The
children are picked up every day and taken to the school where they are given guidance
and food. Mrs Whitmore said, “the school is very keen for the children to learn
English, as this will give them a skill with the aim to increase their opportunities in
life. I am also taking some Art resources out with me as Art is a great therapeutic activity
for them.”
Following an Assembly about the school in India, some girls in Year 9 took the initiative
to raise £140 to support Mrs Whitmore's trip, making and selling cakes and holding a
raffle. Westbourne staff also contributed, so that a total of £200 was raised.
Before she left for India, Mrs Whitmore took the Junior School children on a virtual
trip to Bangalore through her artefacts and stories. They hope to develop a link with
the children she will be getting to know. Lower School continue to support
Tesfaye in Ethiopia and Michell in Zimbabwe with their termly cake sales.
