The new Ashdell Grove building, which is adjacent to Westbourne’s present campus on Westbourne Road, Broomhill, accommodates the enlarged Senior School. At the same time, the Lower and Upper Schools have been merged in a new Junior School for pupils from Reception to Year 6.

The former Radio Sheffield building has been sympathetically restored and developed into a modern learning environment with new science, music and ICT suites, as well as a new assembly/seminar room and several small class rooms specially for the tutor groups that average a dozen boys and girls.
“The new accommodation will allow us to provide three classes in Year 7 in parallel streaming,” said headmaster John Hicks. “This allows for personalised learning at different paces and encourages students to aspire to improve. Despite our expanding numbers as Sheffield’s only co-ed independent school for students from 4 to 16, we are mindful to keep the class sizes very small.”
Co-education, small class sizes and the breadth of the learning experience at Westbourne are cited by parents as the main reasons for Westbourne’s growing popularity. “The new building is an outward sign of our success,” said John, “but the real measure is the added value that we continue to provide for all our students. Children leave Westbourne as confident, well behaved and aspiring young adults.”
Westbourne School opened its original Senior School in new premises six years ago. The success of the Senior School and its current expansion led to the acquisition of the old Radio Sheffield premises, which will be linked to the rest of the Senior School via a bridge.
