Young Politicians

Political experience voted a hit by Westbourne pupils

YOUNG politicians of the future had an early taste of life in the corridors of power as they experienced how local government works.

Our pupils were among groups from several city schools who spent the day at Sheffield Town Hall, meeting council leader Coun Paul Scriven and Lord Mayor Coun Graham Oxley.

“It was a really exciting experience for our students, who were all year 8 to 11,” said Westbourne English and Media Studies teacher Deborah Loane.

“They were invited into to council chamber, met councillors and took part in special debates on subjects like free travel for young people and youth crime.

“Everything was done exactly as it would be in a formal council debate with all speakers addressing the chair and following full protocol.

“It was a fantastic life experience for all the young people taking part and something that Westbourne would definitely want to do again next year.”
