Westbourne School is the only independent co-educational school in Sheffield which caters for children
from reception (age 4) right through to Year 11 (age 16).
The opening of Ashdell Grove has enabled us to expand Westbourne School at Year 7 (age 11). This allows us to offer scholarships to external candidates wishing to join at Year 7, which now has three teaching groups, one of which is a scholarship group. This is fundamental to the school’s aims of fulfilling the potential of every individual child.
The scholarships awarded will be based upon examinations to be taken in January 2009. However, we wish to stress to parents and pupils that entry to Westbourne School is not dependent upon sitting these exams. Entry will continue to be available by the existing method of interview and in class assessment for those who do not wish to apply for a scholarship.
The scholarship exams will consist of papers in English, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The awards will
be based upon academic excellence in the exams, hence the number awarded will vary from year to
year depending upon performance.
The maximum value of a scholarship will equate to 25% of fees, although for those parents who can’t afford a Westbourne education, a scholarship could be topped up by a means tested bursary. Pupils applying for such additional support will be expected to contribute significantly to school life. The value of any award is at the discretion of the Headmaster.
Scholarships are usually available in the following categories:
Academic
Music
Sport
All round – academic + music or sport
Applicants for Music and Sport scholarships will sit the IQ test and will then be assessed in either music or sport. They will also be required to submit a portfolio of evidence identifying their achievements and progression to date as well as their future expectations and may be requested to attend a practical interview subsequent to the exams.
Applicants for the All round scholarships will sit all of the exams and will be assessed in either music or sport or an alternative date to be arranged.
We encourage the parents of all children interested in taking the scholarship exams to visit Westbourne prior to the exams and also to encourage their child to attend the school for a day to ensure they feel relaxed and familiar with Westbourne when they sit the exams.
