STOP PRESS Abby is officially the 2nd fastest girl at 200m and 3rd fastest at 60m in the UK! well done Abby!

Abby Newton in Year 7 gave an outstanding performance at the South Yorkshire Indoor Athletics 3rd series meeting on Sunday 22nd January at the EIS, running for her club the Hallamshire Harriers.

In her debut performance at the U13girls 200m, Abby stormed to victory in a time of  27.8 seconds, with her rival Billy-Jo coming in second place with 29.0 seconds. There were 30 girls in the event from Hull, York, Doncaster, Barnsley.  It was a very fast time and Abby's time beat the U15 girls winning time for the same event!

Abby then went on to win a closely run race in the 60m sprint in a time of 8.4 seconds.

It was a fantastic afternoon, and as usual Abby was her normal calm and modest self.

U9 Football

Our under 9 A and B football teams had a successful morning at the home match against St Hughes on Saturday 21st January.

Sam Brown in Year 3 scored in the 87th minute to level the match 1-1.  Well done to all our boys for displaying a great team spirit and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship throughout.

Dancing Diva!

On Tuesday 13th December Xander May in Year 7, was awarded ‘Dancer of the Year’ at the Helen Taylor School of Dance.

Xander has attended this dance school for the past five years and has just gained, with honours,  her Star 2 dance award for freestyle disco dancing.

Year 5 Rugby Tournament – Friday 4th November

On Friday 4th November Westbourne organised a rugby tournament for Year 5 pupils from St Wilfrid’s and St Marie’s Catholic Primary Schools at Abbeydale Sports Club. The event was a great opportunity for the schools to play in a competitive tournament and the pupils from all schools played with great effort and respect. The overall winners were St Wilfrid’s who took home the silverware. Mr Lawrie was the tournament referee and was ably assisted by Year 9 pupils Alex Carr and Michael Masivi. The event was a great success and plans are underway to repeat it next year.

Cross Country – Longley Park - Saturday 19th November

On Saturday 19th November 4 pupils from Westbourne Senior School took part in the Sheffield Federation for School Sports cross country race at Longley Park. Julian Slater finished a superb 4th in the Year 7 race, with Connor Baxter finishing 13th. In the Year 8 girls race Maddie Pearce, not 100% fit, managed an impressive 2nd place and in the Year 8 boys race Tom Blacksell in his first race finished 22nd  out of a field close to 40. Well done to everyone involved.

Westbourne Hockey Girls are the Champions!

Congratulations to our hockey players who are top of their league after storming to victory in a city school tournament.

Our Under 14s Girls’ Hockey team competed for the first time in the Sheffield Schools’ Sports Federation Hockey Tournament, which was organised by Tapton School and hosted by King Ecgbert’s.

The Westbourne girls took first place after scoring victories against Silverdale, King Ecgbert’s and Tapton and holding Sheffield High School to a goalless draw.

“This was a brilliant day for the girls,” said Mrs Mirfin“ They have worked really hard to attain this level and were playing against some outstanding teams so to be placed first at their first attempt is quite an achievement.”

Jemima at Stafford One Day Event

Talented young horsewoman Jemima Board in Year 8 took part in a team One Day Event in Stafford in October.  At this type of event, the three best scores go through to the next round.  Jemima did incredibly well in the Dressage round despite the horrendously windy weather conditions. She went clear in the Show Jumping and clear in the Cross Country.

Her team went on to win her class with Jemima coming individually 10th out of 25.

This was a superb effort from Jemima,  especially considering that she has trained and brought on her young horse herself - a young horse that was labelled ‘an incredibly difficult young mare to ride’

The judge said that her new young horse was " A spectacular young horse displaying huge potential for the future".  And praised Jemima for her patience and skill.
