Physical Education

This is a very popular subject amongst pupils at Westbourne, when selecting their GCSEs.

The subject involves 60% practical activity. Pupils can participate in a wide variety of activities ranging from games activities (football, netball etc.) to outdoor adventure activities such as skiing and sailing. Pupils can also opt for dance, gymnastics, athletics etc.  From September 2009, the new syllabus will allow pupils to experience different roles within sport. In the past, pupils have focused on the role of the performer, but pupils will now have the opportunity to umpire/referee, coach and lead, in the sports that they enjoy. Pupils in Year 10 get an average of two hours practical lessons per week, plus one theory lesson.

Theory is worth 40%. Pupils follow the Edexcel syllabus throughout the 2 years and learn about physiology and anatomy as well as health and social benefits of physical activity

Pupils also plan, perform and evaluate a Personal Exercise Programme as part of their coursework in Year 11.
