Reception to Year 6
Our Junior School provides the platform for young children
to live, learn and grow in a safe and challenging
environment. Here the foundations are set for high academic
and social achievement which will follow them through the Junior
School into the Senior School. We have high expectations of our
girls and boys in terms of them achieving their best in all areas
of school life and personal development. We enjoy and encourage a
healthy proactive partnership with our parents.
We are a happy and industrious community of girls and boys in a
family atmosphere.
Junior School Campus
Our Junior School campus is a secure site containing classrooms,
a science laboratory, design and food technology centre, art room,
library, communal hall and ICT suite in the Neill Building and
Westbourne House. We enjoy a garden, an outdoor adventure course, a
cycle run, climbing wall, quiet area and an open and a
covered playground, which means that our girls and boys can play
out irrespective of the weather - and we do!
Children are at the centre of all that happens in our school and
seamless progression from one year to the next is enabled by the
high standards of careful planning and leadership and the holistic
pastoral concern of committed and highly skilled staff.
Music, sport and performance have a high profile at Westbourne
and contribute hugely to children's personal development and the
culture of endeavour, teamwork and positive values.
Subject specialists work with all our girls and boys from
Reception Class through to Year 6 in Music, PE, Drama and French
ensures rapid progression and application of skills. Music, PE and
ICT are taught in half class groups for the benefit that personal
tutoring and attention brings in these formative years.
The potential of our more able pupils is detected at an early
age through careful monitoring of their cognitive profile in
regular assessment and performance. We are able to offer
provision in school, in the locality and nationally to
further employ and expand their skills, particularly in music,
mathematics, creative writing, art and sports. Carefully
timetabling parallel maths and literacy lessons enables
our girls and boys to be taught in up to three ability groups and
this further promotes the practice of individualised learning, as
do our masterclasses and booster groups.
All our girls and boys learn to play a musical instrument from
Year 2 onwards and from Year 3 onwards each girl and boy will play
for the school in a sports team each year.
Westbourne offers sports and music tours and residential
opportunities in the UK and abroad from Year 3 upwards, as part of
our age appropriate and progression KS2 residential programme,
and Easter and Summer schools offer advanced skills in Food
Technology and Performing Arts. This extended curriculum bridges
the Junior and Senior Schools and supports our family identity.
Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are housed in the Neill
Building and Year 3 - Year 6 progress through KS2 in Westbourne
House. The site incorporates two playgrounds, a quiet area and a
garden with patio.
An extended day beginning with breakfast and breakfast club
(7.45am - 8.30am for Reception to Year 4 children) and an excellent
range of after school activities is on offer to our families for
convenience. See our current activities on offer.
Academic, music and sports scholarship opportunities with some
exhibitions are available for entrance to our Senior School.
